What Can You Do to Fix Basement Water Damage?

As soon as it’s safe to go in your basement, remove all furnishings from the floor and pull out the carpeting. The carpet pad will likely have to be discarded, but you may be able to dry out the carpet itself.

If it seems salvageable, place a section of it over a blower fan and run it continuously for one day. If it seems completely dry, shift the carpet and keep drying it out until the whole carpet is dry.

Meanwhile, use a wet/dry vacuum to pull up as much water as you can from the floor, and use a mop and bucket for the rest. Then place a new liner pad and set your carpet down again.

Once the carpet is down, you can replace any furniture that didn’t retain damage. During this whole process, try to find and repair the source of the leak, or you may have to go through the whole process again.

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination, so use extreme caution when plugging in vacuums and plans. If you can, avoid plugging them in inside the basement at all. Use extension cords if you have too, and keep the place where the cords meet away from water.
