Gates and fences are great ways to protect your home, but they’re also great ways to give your yard a little bit more privacy. As great as your neighbors may very well be, wouldn’t it be nice to fully enjoy your yard knowing that no one could snoop?
However, before anyone can start building privacy fences, there are a few things that they need to take care of.
Does the Neighborhood Allow Privacy Fences?
The first thing you’re going to want to do is to find out if your neighborhood even allows privacy fences. People who try to make such home improvements in an unapproved way or in a restricted area will not only wind up having to tear the whole thing down, but also get fined, further adding to the financial loss. So before you start construction, check with either the local neighborhood’s rules or with the homeowner’s association first.
Check With the City.
In addition to the neighborhood rules, you’ll also have to check the city codes to see what the area’s rules about privacy fences are. Oftentimes, cities require homeowners to have a permit in order to build a fence in some way. Sometimes, homeowners only need a permit if the fence exceeds a certain height. Other times, homeowners may need a permit just to build a little, picket fence.
Get a Permit.
If you do need a permit, you need to go to your local City Hall or to the city’s Planning Department to obtain it. Cities often charge for these permits, but they’re not that expensive usually.
Wood fences are not only perfect for home protection, they’re also an awesome way to make your yard a bit more private. With some wood fencing, you’ll no longer have to worry about neighbors dogs invading your yard or any other privacy issue. Wouldn’t that be great?
