3 Things to Consider When Installing a New Roof

Handyman roof repair

Installing a new roof can be an expensive and time-consuming process. Depending on whether you are doing the work yourself, or getting professional handyman services has a great impact on your wallet and stress level. That is not the only factor when installing a new roof though. A quality roof installation can last between 25 and 50 years so it’s best to ensure you get it done right the first time and be done with it.

1.) Material: There are a couple different choices for types of roofing materials, but by far the most popular in the U.S. is asphalt shingles. This option typically lasts between 15 and 30 years depending on conditions and upkeep. Metal is another increasingly popular option when installing a new roof. They have the potential to last over 50 years, and don’t require as much maintenance as asphalt. A metal roof will cost you a bit more though usually.

2.) Location/Weather Conditions:Where you love should play a big role in your roofing decisions. If you live in an area where adverse conditions like heavy rain and snow are prevalent, it would be wise to make sure the new roof will adequately withstand it. You’ll be better off in the long run shelling out a little more money on the material and protective sealants than needing repairs soon after.

3.) Professional or DIY?:Some people are good with their hands and don’t mind the idea of climbing up on a roof for hours on end in the blistering sun. If that’s you, you’re a special breed. But in this case it will save you a lot of money. Just make sure you really know what you’re doing. If not, professional helping installing a new roof is the more common way to go. Again it all comes back to the end product. If you’re going to do a shoddy job to save a couple bucks, do yourself a favor and come up with the money to get it done right.

Installing a new roof doesn’t have to mean the sky is falling. establish a game plan going in and set yourself up for success. Plan a reasonable budget and try to stick to it, but always keep in mind shortcuts will only put you behind in the end.
